An area of low pressure area with a clear core, rotating cyclonically (anti-clockwise) and is surrounded completely by at least one isobar on the pressure map. The term is usually used to seperate a high-altitude trough from a high altitude (closed) low. Closed lows at high altitudes are usually not affected by the general eastward movement, and usually move quite slowly.
